Aug 9, 2022 · Okay so I finished completely restoring my 1996 seadoo challenge, came to the last step which is to install a new carbon seal and stainless support ring. The stainless steel ring which has 2 o rings inside gave me sooo much trouble that i had to use wood just to slide the oring into position. Just took both Doos out for the first ride to get the old stabilized gas out of them. The SPX ran great, as it always does. I ran it down, flipped to the reserve and rode in circles by the dock until it started bogging, and brought her in. Now, the high maintenance XP, was a different story...I also twisted the boot so it aligned the carbon ring a little better, and also loosened the back clamp on the boot, then put more pressure toward the ring carrier / carbon ring seal, then re-tightened clamp. No doubt in the future I need a new carbon seal, but, WOW.. the freaking boat runs amazing now. One of the cooling hoses is leaking or the carbon seal on the impeller shaft is leaking. Carefully check all the hoses for leaks. If they are fine, you can sometimes see the carbon seal leaking under the engine using a flashlight and a mirror.
